September 24 - Saturday

My birthday! Today I am 49 years young. Okay, sometimes I feel old but not this day. How many people fly to Texas and have dinner in Mexico for their birthday?

We got up about 4:45 a.m. and took showers. Now this is the middle of the night to me! We found that the donuts had been set out in the breakfast room. We were too early for the eggs and such though. Had the shuttle take us to the airport. Got our stuff rolled into the check in area. Pat's duffle was reallly heavy this time. Mine was light, I usually have a heavy one. Took a while to get checked in as there was a line at the American checkin but we got checked in ok. Got through security with no problems! Yeah! Ramona was waiting for us at the gate. She was glad to see us. We chatted a bit and then it was time to board. We left at 7:10 a.m. for Chicago. Good news, our gate for the connecting flight is in the same terminal and not too bad of a walk. We stopped at McDonald's and Starbucks for breakfast. Tea for Ramona. While we were getting settled in, we see Eileen, George and Mardelle walking our way. We got their attention and they joined us for breakfast. When we were finished, we headed on down to our gate. New York and Michigan arrive close to the same time. Michigan (Rick, Debbie and Dean) should have been one of the first to arrive but they did not get off the ground in Detroit until late.

We all introduced ourselves to each other and got to know one another. Some went off for breakfast. We then boarded our plane for El Paso. Our flights were rather smooth, but it was cloudy all the way. The hurricane probably had something to do with that.

While getting our luggage in El Paso, we were pulling duffle bags off and then we realized that some were not ours so started setting them off to the side just as a couple of young men came over. We sure did not expect a large number of duffles for a couple of military guys at the same time as ours. Rick went and took care of getting the vans. Eileen directed us to Ysleta Lutheran Mission.

I introduced myself to Gail and told her I thought she might know Michelle, which she did. That was so neat. Later it was found out that George knows Gail's grandfather through LLL.

We got our room assignments, claimed beds, got settled in. I called home and David was talking with Lisa on the phone. She then called me to wish me Happy Birthday. She is an exchange student we had from Germany a couple of years ago.

We went to Wal-Mart so people could get water, munchies and food for breakfast. Who would have thought we would flly 6 hours to go to a Wal-Mart? We then got ready for supper.

We went to Ajuua's in Jaurez for supper. This is a really neat restaurant with live entertainment. As we went in, the group sang Happy Birthday to me. Dennis had the singer sing it also.

We got back to Ysleta, had a team meeting about the next day's schedule, had devotions and everyone went to bed.

Many of us did not sleep that well, we discovered in the morning. We had 9 in our room and we decided that people tried not to move so not to wake anyone, but many of us were probably awake at the same time.
