Sept. 29 - Thursday

One more day of clinic in Janos. The day started out slow but it really picked up. Today and yesterday, we had some of the Mennonite people in and some of the Indian migrant workers. Many of the Mennonite women do not know Spanish or English although more knew English than last year. They spoke a dialect of German. So sometimes things were translated from English to Spanish to German and back again. Many of the Indians do not even speak Spanish. I have written down somewhere what it is they speak but have misplaced it. My interpretor said that these people are really the original Mexicans. There were a couple who knew Spanish so we had the three languages going again.

There is quite a Mennonite community here. They are hard workers and are good farmers. At lunch time we asked people to wait for us for about 15 minutes and they were not understanding the time in Spanish and I was able to come up with it in German which they understood. Whew! What you remember when you have to.

We had started packing up and had supper. Six people arrived who had traveled 4 - 5 hours to get here. After supper, they were tested and fitted for glasses. We were glad we were able to help them. We finished packing up and loaded the duffels in the vans. We headed back to the motel for team meeting and devotions.

I had journaled and gone to bed. All of a suddent I heard a scream and then a few seconds later pound pound pound on our door. It was Mardelle. She says come see what is on my wall. We go over there and there is a very long centipede on the wall. We got my sandal, Pat knocked it off and started hitting it. She and Mardelle scooted it outside and the thing started to raise its head. The pounded on it some more. In the morning, the caretaker, through motions told us it was poisonous. The only regret we had was none of us took a photo of the thing.
