In the Image of God: A Christian Vision for Love and Marriage

David and I attended this conference in Ft. Wayne this week. The Cranach Institute was one of the main sponsors of this event. Image of God website has lots of information on this. Especially note the Introduction by Dr. Vieth and the Conference Papers links. We had speakers from all over about many different topics. Going to Dr. Vieth's Blog will give you some summaries of some of the lectures and papers given. A couple of the lectures that I really learned from were Dr. Jastram's on relating marriage to the Image of God, Dr. Lauren Winner's lecture on Letting Sex be Ordinary and Dr. Christopher West on the Theology of the Body. Dr. West said "we are so hungry, we are willing to eat from the dumpster." Mrs. Winner spoke about how we are always trying to spice things up and as a result, things will never be exciting enough, we have to find new ways, when in reality normalcy, familiarity, stability and ordinary may be the way it is meant to be. While ordinary, still satisfying. Dr. Jastram spoke of how we "should treat our spouses as the image of God for us: with reverence, adoration and as a bearer of God's grace and mercy to us."

Dr. Eschelbach spoke of premarital, marital counseling and how Christians should approach marriage, divorce and remarriage. Dr. Eschelbach's paper may be read here.

I also attended a session on Families, The Joy of Faithfulness and Marriage Law in addition to other lectures given. There was so much learned, so much information that it takes one time to fully digest all that was heard. Many handouts to look at and books purchased. This is kind of a highlight of the conference.

On another note, it was 1985 that David graduated from this Seminary. We had been back once a couple of years later. The city has sure changed. It was hard to remember things about the city although this trip did not afford much time to explore. Several Professors he had were still there and some of his classmates were in attendance.

While there, word have been received that one of the Professors had gone to his heavenly home. Dr. Kurt Marquart. He was still teaching while battling Lou Gehrig’s Desease. It is our understanding that he was planning on retiring after this semester. This man was one of David’s professors way back in the mid-80’s. He will be missed by the Seminary community, past and present students, but most of all, his family. This newspaper article is a very nice tribute to Dr. Marquart

The Dr. Jastram of the Deat Sea Scrolls and the Dr. Jastram of my university? Way cool if it is! He reads the Bible readings in Chapel from the original language translating as he goes (or he simply has the text memorized anyways and has the original just there as a reminder, I don't know....). I haven't had him for a class, but he's a very interesting professor and very intelligent!

I just came across your blog from a friend's. :)

What seminary did your husband attend? Just recently we were in MN and visited Central Baptist Seminary where my father-in-law attended and then, nearby, the first church he pastored (where my husband was born). My in-laws were expecting to get to both places that morning and no longer know anyone, but were very pleasantly surprised to walk up and recognize the first person they saw. It was such fun!
