Shipping to Basic - Take Two

Successful!!

Well, we just returned from the Des Moines MEPS where Andrew was sworn in and left for Ft. Leonard Wood. We were not able to go to the airport and I think he was glad. Such an independent kid he is.

They took the young men back to the ceremony room first and then came and got the parents. There were 9 being sworn in at this time and when we walked in, they were all facing the front of the room with their hands behind the back (not sure what this position is called). They were instructed to come to attention when the officer came in the room. She then had them go back to the other position.

She gave a short little talk thanking them for their service. She says if they are never thanked for their service, they at least were thanked on this day and that their enlisting is very much appreciated. She asked each young man (there were only guys today) what their MOS's were. I know that three were Army and several were Navy. I can't remember if any of these were Marine. There were Marines going but they may have been Guard.

The Captain then administered the oath. They then went into the next room to sign the contracts. While they had their travel briefing, we went to get lunch as they said that took an hour. We got back and they were finished a minute or so later. We got to give him hugs and tell him goodbye and to do his best as we know he will. They then left for the airport.

Oh, David had spoken with the Captain and was given permission to say a prayer for those who wanted to stay. Five stayed for the prayer after the swearing in.

Wow..that is really something! You must be very proud of your son! AND it blessed me to read that he had asked if he could 'pray' with those that wanted it! Wow! Now THAT is wonderful!
